Weaving Square at Fuk Loi Estate, 2017

deTour 2017 – Hey! Let’s WEAVE!

Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile (CHAT) aims to promote weaving and textile through community-participatory activities. This time at PMQ, we had a host of weaving activities for visitors to participate in, including Backstrap Loom, Cardboard-Can-Loom and Weaving Square. During the summer of 2017, we invited local design team “made in sample” to design our blockbuster Weaving Square portable installation for our “Let’s Weave” programme, which took place on the streets of Tsuen Wan. It was inspired by the game of mahjong, familiar to many Hongkongers. Replacing mahjong tiles with upcycled fabric, we hope to raise the public’s awareness and interest of weaving. In addition, we would also like to establish more platforms for communication, on the streets corners and public squares.
