Embroidered Beliefs: Spiritual World of the Miao People

Deposit $50 | RSVP

Vivid and intricate, baby carriers of the Miao people are much more than just childcare tools.

Lee Mei Yin, a specialist in the history and dress of China’s ethnic minorities, will share stories and observations from her time living in Miao villages. With the baby carrier as a point of entry, Lee will examine the refined artistry and cultural significance of Miao embroidery.

The talk will explore folk wisdom, community beliefs, moral values, cultural inheritance, and a worldview marked by a deep respect for life. It will also include a show-and-tell session, where participants can take a closer look at the details and textures of Miao baby carriers.

This event accompanies the special display Snuggle and Stitch: Childhood Textiles of Hong Kong in The D. H. Chen Foundation Gallery. The deposit will be refunded in full upon attendance.
