Led by artist Jakkai Siributr of CHAT’s Winter 2023 Programme Jakkai Siributr: Everybody Wanna Be Happy, this workshop aims to bridge between the Shan community of Northern Thailand and people in Hong Kong through embroidery.

Participants are invited to embroider with grey and white thread on pieces previously embroidered in colours by the Shan community of Northern Thailand, and the workshop participants, between whom the project seeks to create an ongoing dialogue. Building upon the artist’s earlier work on displacement, this is a participatory project inspired by a personal attempt to reckon with the protracted refugee situation in Thailand.

Experience level: No prior experience in sewing or embroidery is required. The artist and CHAT’s Textile Programme team will be on-site to discuss the project and offer instructions on embroidery. Suitable for participants aged 8 or above. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
