High Socialist Toile: Between Industry and Craft in the People’s Republic of China, 1950–1990

Free | RSVP

How does textile ornamentation participate in the creation of new political economics and social relations?

Wang Weiwei, curator of Lining Revealed – A Journey Through Folk Wisdom and Contemporary Vision, will guide you through the tubu (homespun fabric) exhibits in CHAT’s exhibition, courtesy of veteran weaver and fabric collector He Yongdi. In the talk that follows, Dr Angie C. Baecker will explore the history of industrial fabric design in the People’s Republic of China, in which cotton manufactured during the Maoist era combined decorative function with political iconography to create inventive patterns of ‘high socialist toile’. She will cast light on the experimentalism of textile design, as well as the intriguing connections between industry and handicraft. The talk will end with a Q&A session.
