Threads of Care: Preserving the Maryknoll Convent Attic
Does the dazzling display of Busy Needles make you want to delve deeper into the preservation of Hong Kong’s handicraft?
In 2020, the Maryknoll Convent School Foundation discovered a long-hidden attic at its convent during a structural inspection. Inside, over 400 embroidery pattern sketches and sewing materials were found, revealing the history of a sewing and embroidery workshop run by the Maryknoll Sisters from the 1920s to the 1970s. This discovery sparked a conservation project involving teachers, students and alumni.
In this conversation, a key member of the project and alumna Ms Iris Kwan will share her experience of discovering, cataloguing and conserving these historical artefacts, as well as insights into the future of the archive.
This event is suitable for students and professionals interested in topics related to conservation and cultural heritage.
