Explore the Korean tradition of straw weaving and make your own shamanic rope of fortune under the guidance of an expert from Seoul!

In traditional Korean culture, the straw rope is more than mere decoration – it is believed to ward off negativity and purify its surroundings. Serving as a golden line or boundary, it is hung to mark sacred spaces and protect them from evil during important events, such as childbirth and village rituals. It also adorns soy sauce jars to wish for good flavour and prevent contamination. When a baby is born, the family would hang straw ropes tied with hanji (traditional Korean paper), pine needles, chilli peppers and charcoal at home, with each item carrying profound symbolic meanings.

In this workshop, Lee Jung-a, Curator of the Korean Museum of Straw and Life, and Wang Weiwei, Curator of CHAT, will introduce you to the precious Korean straw weaving collections at CHAT’s spring exhibition. You will then learn to make a traditional shamanic straw rope with objects of your choice, bringing good fortune and protection to you and your loved ones.

Experience level: No prior experience is needed. Suitable for participants aged 10 or above.

Materials: All tools and materials are provided, including straw grown in Hong Kong. Participants may bring along small meaningful objects (5–12 cm in length and up to 4 cm in thickness) to add to the rope.

Dress code: Please wear comfortable clothing (pants are recommended)
