CHAT with Artist: Gulnara Kasmalieva and Muratbek Djumaliev

Free Admission|RSVP

In recent decades, the relationship between art, agriculture and land has become increasingly pertinent through visionary artistic practices. Join this artist sharing to hear from pioneers of the field, Gulnara Kasmalieva and Muratbek Djumaliev, on their interdisciplinary practice that has now evolved to provide communities of artists a chance to learn through local materials and strive towards permaculture.

The Bishkek-based artist duo will be in conversation with Takahashi Mizuki, Executive Director and Chief Curator of CHAT. Together, the three will also discuss on the duo’s early installation works reflecting on the traditions and transformations of Kyrgyzstan in the post-Soviet era, as well as more recent works focusing on artist residency programmes. The sharing will additionally be moderated by Law Pik Yu Eugenia, Assistant Curator of Learning and Community at CHAT, and conclude with a Q&A session with the audience.

The programme happens on the first day of Clouds, Power and Ornament – Roving Central Asia  on view at CHAT, where the artist duo’s seminal work, Farewell Song  (2001), will be presented as an installation and a video documentation from 25 February to 21 May 2023.
