Citra SASMITA
Citra Sasmita is a self-taught artist based in Bali. Her practice unravels the myths of Balinese art and culture while shedding light on the impact of Dutch colonial rule on notions of authenticity in Bali. She also questions women’s place in social hierarchy and seeks to upend normative constructs of gender by reimagining mythical and classical narratives of war and romance to exalt female resistance. In recent years, she has expanded her practice to include sculpture and installation, incorporating various materials such as braided hair, antique wooden pillars and ancient textiles to create a universe of empowered and divine cosmology.
In 2025, Sasmita held the solo exhibition Into Eternal Land at The Curve of the Barbican Centre, London. Her work has also been shown in major international exhibitions, such as the Hawai’i Triennial (2025), Sharjah Biennial (2025), Toronto Biennial of Art (2024), Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale (2024) and Biennale of Sydney (2024).
