Fyerool Darma

A painter by training, Fyerool Darma is a Singapore-based artist who combines theoretical and historical research with art making. He integrates sound, video, new media, sculpture, text and craft into images, juxtaposing modernist aesthetics and ideology with Southeast Asian cultures, histories, aesthetics and politics. Darma has developed a complex visual vocabulary, drawing from sources such as tangible and intangible Malay heritage, archives, the internet, literature and popular culture. In collaboration with other artists and producers, he repurposes salvaged textiles, e-waste, found or generated images and other materials to blur the boundaries of authorship and examine the materiality and poetics of abstraction.

He has presented projects at the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale (2023), La Trobe Art Institute (2023), the National University of Singapore (NUS) Museum (2022–2023), and National Gallery Singapore (2022). Darma also participated in the Artist-in-Residence programme of the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore in 2019 and NUS Museum’s prep-room in 2017–2018.
