Artefacts of Labour combines garments from the CHAT Collection and oral history to recall the daily outfits of female workers from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. What does their clothing tell us about their lifestyle and values? What about the broader economic and societal changes? How can these everyday matters help us see the world anew?
The 1960s was a decade of change for Hong Kong – the city’s government declared itself economically independent, and an entire generation of youths began to embrace Western culture. Light industries flourished and women flocked into the workforce, whose labour and progressive spirit are portrayed in film, as seen in the roles played by Connie Chan Po Chu. While gaining financial independence and freedom to choose their employment, female workers also became a cornerstone of Hong Kong’s economy.
The transdisciplinary CHAT Collection consists of contemporary art and textile heritage objects. This special display provides multiple interpretations of the collection and historical context for understanding the artworks on view in our seasonal exhibition.
