Kato Izumi

Kato Izumi was born in the Shimane prefecture of Japan and currently lives and works between Tokyo and Hong Kong. Known for his paintings of enigmatic, primal, creature-like figures, Kato deploys diverse mediums such as wood, stones and fabrics to push the limits of pictorial forms and explore the boundary between human and nature.

In 2007, Kato was invited to participate in the 52nd Venice Biennale and has since then been presenting his works globally, including in solo exhibitions at the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (2022); the SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, USA (2021); the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (2019); Hara Museum ARC, Gunma (2019); Fundación Casa Wabi, Puerto Escondido, Mexico (2019); and Red Brick Art Museum, Beijing (2018). Among his recent group exhibitions are A Summer in Le Havre in France (2022) and Hawai’i Triennial 2022 in Honolulu.
