This dual-colour reversible jacket features exquisite mud silk and mud linen fabric inspired by gambiered Canton gauze often worn by women in early 20th century Shanghai, including the late mother of cultural pioneer Rebecca Pan.

Known for their labour- and time-intensive process, mud-dyed fabrics are created specifically in the Shunde area of Guangdong province, China. Fabric is dyed with yam to produce a reddish orange colour, then covered with iron-rich mud from the area that acts as a mordant to create a thin, black, water-repellent layer on one side. This process, treasured as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, produces a breathable, earthy textile that softens to touch as it ages.

Tying the jacket closer to the exhibition is a qipao (also known as a cheongsam) brooch in the shape of a white champaca, a flower that produced Pan’s mother’s favorite scent.

CHAT’s reinvigoration of these jackets both pays homage to the singer and projects into a future where traditional textile and crafts will be treasured once again.
