Wong Zhen Jie Lionel

Presently concluding his doctoral research at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design, Lionel is focusing on new technological approaches to different design disciplines such as fashion and product design. He is proficient in various domains such as additive manufacturing, using exotic, interactive textiles and materials, generative algorithms, and computational form-finding. 

Prior to this, Lionel has more than a decade of design experience working at international companies such as Asusdesign Singapore and Hasbro Inc. USA. He also taught at Hong Kong PolyU, Singapore Polytechnic, the Raffles Design Institute, and the National University of Singapore. For the last six years, he moonlighted at Baëlf Design as co-Founder and Design Executive, and his responsibilities include complex 3D modelling and product development. Baëlf’s notable collaborators include VOGUE, Glenfiddich, the Asian Civilisations Museum and the National Museum in Singapore, and they had exhibited internationally at the Art of Fashion Foundation San Francisco and the New York Fashion Tech Week, IFFTI in Shanghai, among others. 

Lionel had been awarded the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowship in 2020 for his doctoral candidature. He had also received the Bright Future Charitable Foundation Design Scholarship for his Masters studies in Interaction Design from Hong Kong PolyU, of which he achieved a Distinction. Prior to that, he was an Industrial Design major and a Dean’s List recipient from the National University of Singapore.
