Julia Wilmott
Dr Julia Wilmott is a textiles designer, educator and researcher who has worked in the fashion and textiles industry for twenty years. After a decade working as a knitwear designer for many brands in the United Kingdom, Julia moved into academia. She began teaching knitwear design for fashion at undergraduate level while undertaking research into knitted textiles for sustainability. She has recently completed a practice-based doctorate in knitted textiles, specifically examining how knitting methods can improve the tactility of wool fibres that are available but under-utilised due to their perceived itchy handle. Her research focused on how different yarn types can be blended through pattern and structure on the knitting machine to enhance the use and longevity of specific fibres. Now based in Hong Kong, she explores how knitted textiles can improve the longevity of local fibres for the future. Julia holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of the Arts London (2005) and a PhD in Textiles Design from Northumbria University (2023).
