Ade DARMAWAN
Ade Darmawan lives and works in Jakarta as an artist and curator. He is also a co-founder and member of ruangrupa. His works range from installation, objects, drawing, digital print and video.
He studied in the Graphic Arts Department at Indonesia Art Institute. In 1998, a year after his first solo exhibition at the Cemeti Contemporary Art Gallery, Yogyakarta, he attended a two-year residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. His past exhibitions include the solo show Magic Centre, held at both Portikus, Frankfurt (2015) and Van AbbeMuseum, Eindhoven (2016); Gwangju Biennale (2016); Singapore Biennale (2016); and Doing Business with the Dutch (Lumen Travo Gallery, Amsterdam, 2018). He was recently featured in the solo exhibition Water Resistance at ROH, Jarkata and Cemeti, Yogyakarta (2024).
As a curator, he has contributed to Media/Art Kitchen 2013, Condition Report 2016, and the 2017 Asian Art Biennial. From 2006 to 2009, he was a member of Jakarta Arts Council, which led to him being appointed artistic director of Jakarta Biennale in 2009. He was the executive director of Jakarta Biennale from 2013 to 2017. Together with ruangrupa, he curated Sonsbeek’16: transACTION (2016) and served as artistic director for documenta fifteen in Kassel (2022).
