SUMMARY:CHAT 5th Anniversary – Factory of Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Experience the exhibition in full 360° immersion below. Double click to launch the VR 360° tour in full screen mode. \n \n\nDoes heritage only serve to record a bygone era and feed the nostalgia of those living in changing times? How can we collectively learn from the past and forge a better future? \nIn spring 2024\, CHAT celebrates its 5th anniversary with the group exhibition Factory of Tomorrow. Featuring CHAT’s own contemporary art collection and newly commissioned works\, it endeavours to critically examine the past and evoke imagination for what is to come. From textile works and sculptures to immersive installations and videos\, it brings together creations by 19 artists and collectives of Asian backgrounds\, reflecting their takes on textile technology and materials\, diversity\, climate change and our future. The exhibition is roughly divided into two parts. The first part showcases works of contemporary art collected by CHAT over the years and explores the role of textile in Hong Kong’s industrial past through the artists’ eyes. The second part then looks to the present and future\, using new mediums and technologies to address various issues and perspectives. \nFactory of Tomorrow is in the genealogy of CHAT’s curatorial journey over the last 5 years. Through heritage\, it invites visitors\, artists and designers to learn from history and build a better path forward. \n

SUMMARY:Patternways: Visualising Hong Kong in Transition
DESCRIPTION:‘Patternways’ presents 4 significant patterns of Hong Kong\, some more familiar than others\, once found on department store wrapping papers\, woven silk fabrics\, woolen knitwear and wax printed fabrics. The exhibition display investigates each pattern as a designed product and the way they are circulated\, and in the process\, they connect Hong Kong with mainland China\, Japan\, the United Kingdom\, the United States\, all the way to Ghana and Nigeria. By connecting us with other places\, patterns reveal Hong Kong as a city constantly open to and defined by change. \nCurated by Bruce Li\, Assistant Curator in Learning and Community \nPlease refer to Special Arrangements for the latest access and entry requirements. \n

SUMMARY:Jakkai Siributr: Everybody Wanna Be Happy
DESCRIPTION:\nIn Winter Programme 2023\, CHAT hosts the solo exhibition of acclaimed Thai contemporary artist\, Jakkai Siributr. The exhibition offers a retrospective of Siributr’s artistic practice spanning two decades\, featuring wall-hanging and sculptural pieces\, as well as an ongoing workshop for refugees in Thailand. The exhibition presents a stimulating commentary on the pressing contemporary issues in Thailand and abroad. \nThe exhibition starts with his early textile piece\, Untitled (2005)\, which presents the genealogy of textile/fibre art established through a separation from textile craft. Since then\, he has proactively created the works with embroidery\, patchwork and quilting to make critical commentaries on abusive power in Thai society and draw attention to unheard voices. \nWhen the COVID-19 global pandemic broke out in 2020\, Siributr created textile pieces like Yellow Fever and White Plague which depict the racist attacks and discriminations that the pandemic exposed\, but also proactively used his art to alleviate the situation by supporting workers who have been made redundant due to the pandemic. For the exhibition at CHAT\, Siributr has created new works using uniforms worn by people in Hong Kong who also suffered a negative impact on their livelihood due to the pandemic. \nSiributr’s works break free from both conventional craft — which often shies away from innovation — and the lineage of Western modernism in textile and fibre art. Through an investigation of the diverse and sometimes materialistic endeavours humans undertake in search of happiness\, visitors are invited to reflect on the meaning of this elusive emotion. The exhibition poses a range of questions: What brings us happiness? Wealth\, status\, love\, or fame? And\, what do we rely on to find happiness? Can we be happy alone? \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Seed to Textile 2023
DESCRIPTION:The garments we wear every day are composed of fibres\, many of which are derived from natural materials. \nCHAT’s ongoing community programme Seed to Textile has been tracing the roots of textile production since 2019 and exploring the contemporary significance of the relationship between textiles\, humanity and the nature world. Stepping into the 4th year of the programme\, we extend our experiences and learnings from the community to the younger generation in local schools to nurture our young Seeders. \nWe unfolded the programme by inviting local farmers to pass the knowledge of growing plants that can be used to create natural dyes to primary and secondary school students at school farms and the rooftop farm of The Mills. With our hand-grown natural resources\, CHAT collaborates closely with an alumnus of Seed to Textile\, multidisciplinary artist Hao Lap Yan Benjamin and two other groups of local artists to lead workshops that create works of art which also serve as practical commodities. Benjamin harnessed food waste and plants cultivated by the students to create natural dyes for textiles. Local art studio Mudwork led woodworking workshops and\, together with students\, built a cart that will be utilised to conduct dyeing workshops on-the-go. Indigo artist Makie Chang taught students zero-waste cutting and sewing techniques to fashion bespoke organic garments that are one-of-a-kind. \nThe students also journeyed to Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden where they encountered indigenous Chinese indigo thriving in its natural habitat and explored the Jockey Club Lo Wai Chinese Herb Garden which houses Chinese herbs that can function as natural dyes. Supplementing with a yoga session infused with inspiration of nature\, the programme aims to search for the balance of body and soul with the nature and our community. The results of a yearlong efforts will be exhibited in CHAT Winter Programme 2023. \nWe invite our audiences to join us in exploring: Can we achieve a sustainable ecology by collaborating with the nature world and with each other? \nParticipating schools:\nC.C.C. Kei Faat Primary School (Yau Tong)\, Hoi Pa Street Government Primary School\, St. Francis Xavier’s School\, Tsuen Wan \nAcknowledgements:\nJockey Club Lo Wai Chinese Herb Garden\, Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden\, Metta Yoga & Healing Circle\, Sustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation \n  \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Of the Same Root: CHAT with BUAISOU Interns
DESCRIPTION:Free Admission｜RSVP \nIn winter 2022\, CHAT openly recruited indigo lovers from Hong Kong to participate in the BUAISOU Internship Programme 2023. The talk will feature artists Antonia Cheung and Chan Pei\, as they share their 3-month immersion in BUAISOU’s studio and farms in Tokushima. From cultivating natural dyes\, harvesting and fermentation\, to the intricate dyeing process\, we will unravel the lesser-known stories behind Japanese indigo production and explore the potential of developing natural dyeing in Hong Kong. \nThe exclusive 3-month internship programme follows the Absolute Blue: BUAISOU Works with Japanese Natural Indigo exhibition presented in CHAT’s Winter Programme 2022. It is the first comprehensive exhibition to introduce the works by BUAISOU\, a young craft collective working with Japanese natural indigo. Based in Tokushima\, BUAISOU pursues the craft of Japanese natural indigo dye through traditional fermentation methods. From cultivating\, processing and fermenting indigo\, to dyeing\, most of their production procedures are performed manually using traditional methods. While upholding the revered traditions of the centuries-old craft\, they pushed the boundaries beyond textiles and communicates with contemporary audiences through diverse collaborations with international brands and designers. \nLanguage: Cantonese with simultaneous interpretation into English \n
