Chen Foundation Gallery are vestiges of the golden era of Hong Kong’s textile industry. The exhibition Welcome to the Spinning Factory! will provide a brief but intensive history of Hong Kong’s textile industry\, featuring rich imageries\, vintage cotton products and archival documents and objects. You are also invited to experience the manual cotton-spinning process using traditional spinning instruments\, and design and create your own cotton label at the workshop stations in The D. H. SUMMARY:Untitled by Kato Izumi
DESCRIPTION:Kato Izumi is a renowned painter based in both Tokyo and Hong Kong. Born and raised in a rural area in Shimane prefecture in Japan\, young Kato’s playground was always surrounded by rich nature. This experience from his childhood instilled in him the idea that humans are a part of nature. When he was invited by CHAT for the Spring Programme in 2020\, he made an installation of 5 figures with painted stone heads and bodies from living plants in collaboration with local farmers. Whilst the stones remain unchanged\, the living plants will continue to grow\, altering the shape of the figures’ bodies. This installation resulted in his rst art piece embracing the changes of nature. \nTo commemorate the collaboration between Kato\, CHAT and Hong Kong farmers\, this piece will be updated with different kinds of plants and will be kept as art for those who love both art and nature. \nThis work was made in collaboration with the artist\, CHAT and Hong Kong farmers. \nCollection of CHAT\, Hong Kong\nTechnical Support: Sustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation \n \n

SUMMARY:Interactive Experience : Illumin-Loom
DESCRIPTION:Operate a weaving loom from the future and create your own illuminated textile images in CHAT Arcade! Illumin-Loom is a walk-in interactive experience where visitors can design unique patterns on colourful light strips. The finished creation will be exported as a digital image to download. Visitors can also choose to print the image as heat transfer stickers\, and in our 30-Minute Making workshop\, iron it onto a special tote bag. Alternatively\, visitors can bring home the sticker and follow the provided instructions to iron it onto a textile item of their own choice. \nThe light strips of Illumin-Loom simulate the threads in a fabric while alluding to the historical relationship between digital computation and textile technology. Additionally\, the library of contemporary motifs and background patterns is inspired by Hong Kong’s textile heritage\, paying homage to the history of The Mills as a former spinning factory. \nInstallation\, graphic and game design: pill & pillow and HATO \n

SUMMARY:‘Factory of Tomorrow’ Community Embroidery Curtains
DESCRIPTION:What is a ‘Factory of Tomorrow’ like in the eyes of primary school students? In CHAT Lounge\, a set of embroidered curtains takes inspiration from the new motto as CHAT celebrates its 5th anniversary in March 2024. \nOver the course of several months\, hundreds of primary school students from the ‘333 Learning Companion Leadership Program’ supported by We R Family Foundation learned about CHAT and its history to create drawings and paper models of a ‘Factory of Tomorrow’. In a time of rapid change\, this exhibition invites you to slow down\, engage with the work of 14 artists from across Asia\, and turn inwards. \nTextiles have always been inseparable from our spiritual life. They appear in rituals and ceremonies\, accompanying people through the cycles of life and death\, joy and sorrow\, parting and reunion. They also move with us every day\, gently connecting our inner world and the spaces we inhabit. Passed from generation to generation\, the acts of weaving\, dyeing and stitching form a tactile language of memory\, emotion\, belief and imagination – both personal and collective. \nHere\, we explore textiles as living pathways that intertwine into spiritual maps. DESCRIPTION:This thematic display explores Indanthrene Blue\, the industrial dye iconically represented by ‘Miss Happiness’ in 1930s China. It is the world’s first synthetic vat dye and is known for exceptional vibrancy. The colour resonated with the nationwide sentiment during the turbulent 1930s and 1940s\, pioneering a new modern aesthetic. The consistent\, standardised shade of ‘blue’ also became a staple in school uniforms and other institutional attire. \nDiscover a shade of blue that is not melancholic and trace its journey through time! \n

DESCRIPTION:In 1950s Hong Kong\, nearly one in every two people you’d meet was a teenager or child – swaddled in a baby sling\, dressed in home-sewn clothes\, or clutching a toy worn from love. While lacking the convenience of today’s screen-based world\, children grew up surrounded by textiles\, textures and playful peers just as creative. \nSnuggle and Stitch brings together local childhood textiles from the 1930s to the 2020s\, featuring heirloom garments\, ready-made fashion\, mass-produced toys\, artisanal dolls and hands-on activities. It invites you to revisit fading social values and to nurture human connection\, resourceful thinking and care for the materials we pass on. \n
