SUMMARY:Untitled by Kato Izumi
DESCRIPTION:Kato Izumi is a renowned painter based in both Tokyo and Hong Kong. Born and raised in a rural area in Shimane prefecture in Japan\, young Kato’s playground was always surrounded by rich nature. This experience from his childhood instilled in him the idea that humans are a part of nature. When he was invited by CHAT for the Spring Programme in 2020\, he made an installation of 5 figures with painted stone heads and bodies from living plants in collaboration with local farmers. Whilst the stones remain unchanged\, the living plants will continue to grow\, altering the shape of the figures’ bodies. This installation resulted in his rst art piece embracing the changes of nature. \nTo commemorate the collaboration between Kato\, CHAT and Hong Kong farmers\, this piece will be updated with different kinds of plants and will be kept as art for those who love both art and nature. \nThis work was made in collaboration with the artist\, CHAT and Hong Kong farmers. \nCollection of CHAT\, Hong Kong\nTechnical Support: Sustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation \n \n

Chen Foundation Gallery. \nMakers of Hong Kong: The Tailoring Story of Linda Lee \nLinda Lee served as the costume director of The City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) for over 30 years. Since each performance costume is unique and created based on the specific needs of the costume designers\, choreographers\, and dancers\, as the costume director\, she often had to navigate and mediate between the three parties to satisfy their diverse\, and sometimes conflicting\, requirements. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Story of Navy’s Tailor Tony Wong \nIn 1949\, Tony Wong’s father followed the large number of Shanghai tailors who moved south to Hong Kong\, and opened the Fu Shing tailoring label at Fenwick Pier\, where he served the U.S. sailors and officers to tailor their uniforms and suits \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: The Story of Former Garment Worker Wong To Yuen \nBy the late 1960s\, an abundance of technical schools were established and attended by factory workers seeking upward mobility and those who wanted to produce the latest Western fashion for themselves. Former garment worker Wong To Yuen studied at one of the technical schools back in the days. Her final coursework consisted of a casual outfit and a night gown\, which she not only designed and made but also modelled at the graduation show! \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: A Family’s Tailor \nIn this interview\, the Tsui sisters recount their childhood in 1950s and 60s Hong Kong\, when their amah doubled as a housemaid and an at-home family’s tailor\, creating everything from a child’s mini wadded jacket to a cheongsam belonging to a young lady. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Tracing Wax Prints \nWhat is Ankara fabric exactly? In this episode of ‘Makers of Hong Kong: In Conversation\,’ we have the pleasure of inviting fashion stylist Jaho Anita from Nigeria to provide insights into the fascinating world of Ankara fabric and its production process! \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Knitting Shared Memories  \nIn this interview with veteran knitwear producer Miranda Wong (Founder\, Ms-Square) and emerging designer Phyllis Chan (Co-Founder\, YanYan Knits)\, the pair engage in a cross-generational dialogue on the development of the local knitwear industry since the 1980s with particular focus on market environment\, emergence of original designs and unique operation models. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Collecting Patterns \nJohn Wu (graphic designer and collector) shares on his appreciation of the patterned wrapping papers of department stores in Hong Kong. In the process\, he describes the development of local packaging design and reveals how patterns reflect Hong Kong’s divergent consumer culture. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: From Brocades to Neckties \nChuk Sheung Yu (former silk weaver) and K. K. Tung (Founder\, Tung’s Computer Weaving Neckties Centre) share on their career development in the local silk industry. Their stories reveal how\, since the 1930s\, the industry has continuously adapted to market conditions to create unique textile designs and business models. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Tales of Tablecloths \nGuest host and senior textile industry advisor Albert Chan introduces various weaving techniques and speaks to Gigi Ng\, the 4th generation successor of Ser Wong Fun restaurant. In their conversation\, they share about the application of traditional weaving methods in everyday life\, and how the practice of using tablecloths in Chinese restaurants shapes our dining experience. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Finding a City’s Palate \nAnimation artist Lee Yuk Ki Florence created the colourful thematic illustrations for the ‘Textile for Food’ display. In this episode\, she shares her creative process by revisiting the locations where she captured the textures and details of her work\, and introduces to the audience the urban landscapes and objects that inspired her. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Thinking with Tying and Interlacing\n \nGuest Presenter Lee Chi Wing speaks with the owners of Cheung So Kee Wire Netting and Chu Kee Greengrocers. The two explore how denim has shaped the popular culture of Hong Kong\, as well as the important role that their editorial practice played throughout the conception of the issue. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Refashioning Chinese Garments \nSiu Lan of the brand Tailor Made by Siu Lan share her experience of being a tailor since she was 23 years old\, imbibing traditional Chinese patternmaking into modern\, one-of-a-kind yet everyday garments. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Knotting Fishing Nets \nSarah Yip and Rex Law of Eco Cheung Chau share their experiences conserving fishing traditions and other intangible heritages of Cheung Chau. \n \n

SUMMARY:Interactive Experience : Illumin-Loom
DESCRIPTION:Operate a weaving loom from the future and create your own illuminated textile images in CHAT Arcade! Illumin-Loom is a walk-in interactive experience where visitors can design unique patterns on colourful light strips. The finished creation will be exported as a digital image to download. Visitors can also choose to print the image as heat transfer stickers\, and in our 30-Minute Making workshop\, iron it onto a special tote bag. Alternatively\, visitors can bring home the sticker and follow the provided instructions to iron it onto a textile item of their own choice. \nThe light strips of Illumin-Loom simulate the threads in a fabric while alluding to the historical relationship between digital computation and textile technology. Additionally\, the library of contemporary motifs and background patterns is inspired by Hong Kong’s textile heritage\, paying homage to the history of The Mills as a former spinning factory. \nInstallation\, graphic and game design: pill & pillow and HATO \n

SUMMARY:‘Factory of Tomorrow’ Community Embroidery Curtains
DESCRIPTION:What is a ‘Factory of Tomorrow’ like in the eyes of primary school students? In CHAT Lounge\, a set of embroidered curtains takes inspiration from the new motto as CHAT celebrates its 5th anniversary in March 2024. \nOver the course of several months\, hundreds of primary school students from the ‘333 Learning Companion Leadership Program’ supported by We R Family Foundation learned about CHAT and its history to create drawings and paper models of a ‘Factory of Tomorrow’. DESCRIPTION:Let’s witness Hong Kong’s only operating industrial drawing frame in action at CHAT!  \nLeung Fung Yee (Auntie Yee) worked as an experienced machine operator who operated spinning machines at different cotton mills\, including Nan Fung Textile\, from 1980s to 1990s. She is now retired but she comes to CHAT to make the ‘Cherry’ drawing frame come alive again! Performing one of the essential processes in the spinning production\, this drawing frame is donated by the last cotton-spinning mill in Hong Kong\, Tai Hing Cotton Mills Ltd. The demonstration is free and open to the public at The D. H. Chen Foundation Gallery. \nCome and learn about what the huge machine can do and have a chat with Auntie Yee!              \n

DESCRIPTION:The Spirit of Labour is Marcos Kueh’s ongoing textile series inspired by union banners and membership certificates from the Industrial Revolution era. The rich imagery and slogans on these historical artefacts are more than visual emblems – they once carried emotional and spiritual meaning\, offering protection\, solidarity and hope to workers in harsh working environments. \nThis newly commissioned installation\, named The Spirit of Labour: ZhiNü by the artist\, is the largest iteration of the series to date. Presented in a former cotton-spinning mill at the heart of Hong Kong’s textile production\, it pays tribute to the resilience and contributions of female workers\, whose labour is a fundamental yet often undervalued part of the industry’s history. The monumental collage of woven documentary photographs and blessing words illustrates the invisible threads connecting generations of female workers: friendship\, care and collective strength. They will then head to CHAT Studio\, where they will learn to master colour mixing and layering using plant dyes. DESCRIPTION:CHAT’s Accessibility Docent Training Programme trains Deaf\, hard-of-hearing and hearing individuals to collaboratively lead unique museum experiences. Centred around a sign bilingual design\, it prepares participants to deliver interactive and multisensory museum tours in Hong Kong Sign Language and Cantonese. In 2025\, the programme received the ICOM-CECA Best Practice Award\, which recognises exceptional museum education programmes globally. \nIn this year’s edition\, participants will learn to utilise the expressive characteristics of Hong Kong Sign Language to craft engaging museum experiences for visitors. The training is developed and led by local and international museum professionals and researchers in sign language and deaf education.
