SUMMARY:Untitled by Kato Izumi
DESCRIPTION:Kato Izumi is a renowned painter based in both Tokyo and Hong Kong. Born and raised in a rural area in Shimane prefecture in Japan\, young Kato’s playground was always surrounded by rich nature. This experience from his childhood instilled in him the idea that humans are a part of nature. When he was invited by CHAT for the Spring Programme in 2020\, he made an installation of 5 figures with painted stone heads and bodies from living plants in collaboration with local farmers. Whilst the stones remain unchanged\, the living plants will continue to grow\, altering the shape of the figures’ bodies. This installation resulted in his rst art piece embracing the changes of nature. \nTo commemorate the collaboration between Kato\, CHAT and Hong Kong farmers\, this piece will be updated with different kinds of plants and will be kept as art for those who love both art and nature. \nThis work was made in collaboration with the artist\, CHAT and Hong Kong farmers. \nCollection of CHAT\, Hong Kong\nTechnical Support: Sustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation \n \n

SUMMARY:Makers of Hong Kong: In Conversation
DESCRIPTION:‘Made in Hong Kong’ is a distinguishing emblem of quality and history that has carried different meanings over the generations past. \nIn the ‘Makers of Hong Kong: In Conversation’ video series\, ‘makers’ of textiles from knotted fishnets to tailored saam fu are invited to share their making process\, practice and their thoughts on the continued importance of ‘Made in Hong Kong’. Topics of discussion will reflect on the displayed objects of Misfitted: Unspoken Stories of Tailoring and past displays at The D. H. Chen Foundation Gallery. \nMakers of Hong Kong: The Tailoring Story of Linda Lee \nLinda Lee served as the costume director of The City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) for over 30 years. Since each performance costume is unique and created based on the specific needs of the costume designers\, choreographers\, and dancers\, as the costume director\, she often had to navigate and mediate between the three parties to satisfy their diverse\, and sometimes conflicting\, requirements. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Story of Navy’s Tailor Tony Wong \nIn 1949\, Tony Wong’s father followed the large number of Shanghai tailors who moved south to Hong Kong\, and opened the Fu Shing tailoring label at Fenwick Pier\, where he served the U.S. sailors and officers to tailor their uniforms and suits \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: The Story of Former Garment Worker Wong To Yuen \nBy the late 1960s\, an abundance of technical schools were established and attended by factory workers seeking upward mobility and those who wanted to produce the latest Western fashion for themselves. Former garment worker Wong To Yuen studied at one of the technical schools back in the days. Her final coursework consisted of a casual outfit and a night gown\, which she not only designed and made but also modelled at the graduation show! \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: A Family’s Tailor \nIn this interview\, the Tsui sisters recount their childhood in 1950s and 60s Hong Kong\, when their amah doubled as a housemaid and an at-home family’s tailor\, creating everything from a child’s mini wadded jacket to a cheongsam belonging to a young lady. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Tracing Wax Prints \nWhat is Ankara fabric exactly? In this episode of ‘Makers of Hong Kong: In Conversation\,’ we have the pleasure of inviting fashion stylist Jaho Anita from Nigeria to provide insights into the fascinating world of Ankara fabric and its production process! \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Knitting Shared Memories \nIn this interview with veteran knitwear producer Miranda Wong (Founder\, Ms-Square) and emerging designer Phyllis Chan (Co-Founder\, YanYan Knits)\, the pair engage in a cross-generational dialogue on the development of the local knitwear industry since the 1980s with particular focus on market environment\, emergence of original designs and unique operation models. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Collecting Patterns \nJohn Wu (graphic designer and collector) shares on his appreciation of the patterned wrapping papers of department stores in Hong Kong. In the process\, he describes the development of local packaging design and reveals how patterns reflect Hong Kong’s divergent consumer culture. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: From Brocades to Neckties \nChuk Sheung Yu (former silk weaver) and K. K. Tung (Founder\, Tung’s Computer Weaving Neckties Centre) share on their career development in the local silk industry. Their stories reveal how\, since the 1930s\, the industry has continuously adapted to market conditions to create unique textile designs and business models. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Tales of Tablecloths \nGuest host and senior textile industry advisor Albert Chan introduces various weaving techniques and speaks to Gigi Ng\, the 4th generation successor of Ser Wong Fun restaurant. In their conversation\, they share about the application of traditional weaving methods in everyday life\, and how the practice of using tablecloths in Chinese restaurants shapes our dining experience. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Finding a City’s Palate \nAnimation artist Lee Yuk Ki Florence created the colourful thematic illustrations for the ‘Textile for Food’ display. In this episode\, she shares her creative process by revisiting the locations where she captured the textures and details of her work\, and introduces to the audience the urban landscapes and objects that inspired her. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Thinking with Tying and Interlacing\n \nGuest Presenter Lee Chi Wing speaks with the owners of Cheung So Kee Wire Netting and Chu Kee Greengrocers. Through the conversations and demonstrations\, they share about the design logic behind interlacing with metal wires and tying with ‘salt water grass’\, and experiment with new shapes and functions. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Shaping with Cloth \nGuest Presenter Professor Siu Yan Ho speaks to Liu Chui Tong (Owner of Shun Hing Lung Kwai Kee Bean Products) and Fu Wing Cheung (Owner of Kwan Kee Store) to explore the history and use of textiles as tools for cooking.\n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Culinary Style \nLisa Fong (culinary show writer and presenter) shares on her collection of aprons\, exploring through them her experience in the television industry and her influence on the image of the modern housewife. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Changing School Uniforms\n \nPaul Lam and Peter Lam (Director and Managing Director of Kam Lun Tailors Limited) share on the conceptualisation\, production and marketing of school uniforms\, revealing the business’s unique position in between fashion and tailoring. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Patching Denim Culture \nPeter Wong and Ching Siu Wai (former Editor and Art Director of City Magazine) share their experience putting together the special denim issue of City Magazine in the 1990s. The two explore how denim has shaped the popular culture of Hong Kong\, as well as the important role that their editorial practice played throughout the conception of the issue. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Refashioning Chinese Garments \nSiu Lan of the brand Tailor Made by Siu Lan share her experience of being a tailor since she was 23 years old\, imbibing traditional Chinese patternmaking into modern\, one-of-a-kind yet everyday garments. \n \nMakers of Hong Kong: Knotting Fishing Nets \nSarah Yip and Rex Law of Eco Cheung Chau share their experiences conserving fishing traditions and other intangible heritages of Cheung Chau. \n \n

SUMMARY:‘Factory of Tomorrow’ Community Embroidery Curtains
DESCRIPTION:What is a ‘Factory of Tomorrow’ like in the eyes of primary school students? In CHAT Lounge\, a set of embroidered curtains takes inspiration from the new motto as CHAT celebrates its 5th anniversary in March 2024. \nOver the course of several months\, hundreds of primary school students from the ‘333 Learning Companion Leadership Program’ supported by We R Family Foundation learned about CHAT and its history to create drawings and paper models of a ‘Factory of Tomorrow’. Several works were then selected by a panel of judges and transformed into digitally embroidered designs by Tajima Embroidery Machines Limited\, resulting in this one-of-a-kind project that brings together art\, industry and community. \nTechnical Sponsor: Tajima Embroidery Machines Limited\nCommunity Partner: We R Family Foundation\nWith special thanks to Sudo Reiko and Ikko Yokoyama \n  \n

Double click to launch the VR 360° tour in full screen mode. \n \nEmbroidery\, beading\, drawnwork – these intricate tasks were once skilfully carried out by many of our older generations. SUMMARY:Tidal Weavers: Islands Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Experience the exhibition in full 360° immersion below. Double click to launch the VR 360° tour in full screen mode. \n \n\nWhether ocean\, strait or stream\, water is not merely a connector of lands\, but a living presence that moves with memory and labour\, carrying traces of migrations\, trade\, rituals and kinship. Similarly\, textile is not only a cultural artefact\, but also a mobile\, tactile archive threaded with the everyday\, the sacred and the collective. \nTidal Weavers unfolds as a process and generative space of shared memory and interwoven knowledge. Central to it is an artist exchange between grassroots organisations across South China Sea to cultivate mutual learning and long-term collaboration. Artists\, weavers\, researchers and community members dwell and work together in immersive settings. Through conversations\, shared meals\, daily routines and collaborative making\, friendships grow and shape the artworks as much as the materials themselves. \nThe project offers an ecology of stories\, motifs and rhythms that respond to the specificity of place and the generosity of human encounter\, emphasising slowness\, listening and reciprocity as strategies of artistic and social engagement. It honours people\, water\, land and textile alike – as carriers of life\, of memory\, and of the deep ties that bind people across distance. \n

SUMMARY:Seed to Textile 2025:Sara Tse Open Studio
DESCRIPTION:Experience the exhibition in full 360° immersion below. Double click to launch the VR 360° tour in full screen mode. \n \nSince 2019\, CHAT’s flagship community programme Seed to Textile has been acquainting artists and the public with the connections between nature\, textiles and art\, offering hands-on experiences ranging from farming to gallery practice. This year\, we have invited Hong Kong artist Sara Tse to explore how nature and textiles weave into people’s memories and\, during the process\, unravel and reweave communal experiences by collecting oral histories and co-creating with the public. \nSince 2015\, Tse has been researching and documenting the history of Kwai Chung Public School. Perched atop a hill and nestled in nature on Castle Peak Road in Kwai Chung since 1952\, it was once a cradle of memories for numerous alumni who call Tsuen Wan home. Based on her now-demolished alma mater\, Tse led ‘Seeders’ – comprising fellow alumni across generations and members of the public – to revive the botanical heritage precious to them. At the rooftop farm of The Mills and a village school farm\, they planted common Hong Kong species that had thrived at the school. These plants\, native to some regions and invasive elsewhere\, are powerful testaments to personal and collective memories\, embodying distinct meanings and identities. Tse and Seeders produced natural dyes and fibres from the harvest for collaborative workshops with public participants\, including ceramic making\, textile dyeing\, cyanotype photography and branch weaving. This effort has manifested the enduring link between humanity and nature\, embedded in our collective experience and passed down through generations. \nCollaborators and Planting Partners:\nPak Heung Central Primary School\nCreative and Professional Writing Programme\, Hong Kong Baptist University\nKadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden\nSustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation \n

SUMMARY:Artefacts of Circulation
DESCRIPTION:Experience the exhibition in full 360° immersion below. Double click to launch the VR 360° tour in full screen mode. \n \nIn the industrial era of Hong Kong\, textile products ranging from cones of yarn to finely knitted shirts were sold widely within the city and abroad to manufacturers\, wholesalers and individual consumers. Accompanying these Hong Kong products were boxes and labels printed or woven with iconic designs\, each shaped by unique aesthetic\, linguistic and economic circumstances. They are evidence of the city’s industrial development and circulation. \nThrough textile packaging and ads\, this display visualises Hong Kong’s relationship with domestic and international markets from the post-war period to the 1980s\, while exploring the themes of exchange and visual culture. \n
